We have had better times than the past 18 months. But there has perhaps been one silver lining. A ban on non-essential travel and lockdowns enabled us to witness - for the first time ever - what happens to our environment when normal life grinds to a halt.

Almost every day I deal with a neologism, while sometimes I have to engage with a prelogism, and, occasionally, if I am especially lucky, I attend the birth of a protologism. What am I? This isn’t actually a riddle, and I am not a doctor (well, I am a spin doctor, but that actually has nothing to do with it.)

The prospect of an extended stay at a hotel rarely has negative connotations. What is a hotel if not a magical place where you can tuck swimming pool-pruned fingers into room service fries, cloaked in a fluffy robe, on a bouncy-castle bed? As arduous as business travel can sometimes be, extending your hotel stay after the work element of your trip has ended is an indulgence.

As we get closer to the end – the theme tune to the game show ‘Deal or No Deal’ is in the back of our minds - it’s natural to be concerned by the dizzying news emerging from negotiations in Brussels. On the plus side, 2020 has pushed us to new depths of resilience and ease at navigating uncertainty.

Back in the 1950s, the concept of ‘telecommuting’ was first touted as being the future of work. The term was said to have been coined by Jack Niles, a former NASA engineer who proposed it as an innovative answer to traffic, urban sprawl, and scarcity of non-renewable resources. The concept is still around, but in 2020, we all know it simply as ‘working from home’, or just ‘WFH’.

Around the world, travel restrictions are gradually being eased. In recent weeks, a number of countries have allowed domestic travel to resume. Some have even restarted – or announced plans to restart –international travel through the formation of “travel bubbles” and “travel corridors”, where borders are only being opened only to visitors from certain countries.
